If your business relies on pcbs from the Far East, September is the point at which Chinese New Year planning should move from a note in the calendar to a proper supply-chain conversation.
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February. The official public holiday is expected to cover roughly seven or eight days, with the central holiday period running around 5–12 February. You can confirm the 2027 date and holiday information through China Highlights’ Chinese New Year 2027 guide.
But anyone who has managed PCB production for long enough knows that the official holiday is only part of the story.
For PCB factories, the practical disruption can last four to six weeks. Production often slows from around the middle of January as employees travel home. Manufacturing then stops or runs at very limited capacity during the holiday itself. After that, factories face a gradual restart, with workers returning at different times and production building back up through February. In many cases, normal capacity is not properly restored until early March.
That is why I am encouraging UK electronics manufacturers to start planning Q1 2027 PCB supply now.
Why September is not too early
At Minnitron, we have been involved in the electronics industry since 1962. Over that time, we have seen many customers leave Chinese New Year planning until January because the official holiday still appears to be weeks away.
That approach is risky.
By January, the best production slots may already be committed. Materials may have been allocated elsewhere. Freight space becomes harder to secure. If there is a technical query or a design issue, there is less time to resolve it before factories begin winding down.
September gives you time to make sensible decisions rather than urgent ones.
It allows you to:
- Review your Q1 2027 build requirements.
- Confirm which PCB and PCBA orders are genuinely critical.
- Complete any necessary DFM review.
- Reserve factory capacity before the pre-holiday rush.
- Arrange a buffer batch or stock-holding plan.
- Confirm freight arrangements before space becomes constrained.
- Qualify an alternative source if your usual route is under pressure.
You do not necessarily need to manufacture everything immediately. You do need to understand what capacity and materials will be required, then secure a realistic plan with your supplier.

The 2026 supply situation makes early planning more important
Chinese New Year creates a recurring annual disruption. The difference going into 2027 is that the PCB supply chain is already operating under pressure.
Throughout 2026, we have seen volatility across laminate, resin, copper foil and other key PCB materials. Industry reports have pointed to constrained laminate capacity, extended material lead times and increasing demand from data-centre and AI infrastructure projects. Evertiq has reported on the intensifying PCB material shortage and the way laminate capacity is being absorbed by high-demand sectors.
For buyers, that has several consequences:
-
Materials may need to be secured earlier.
A factory may have available production time but still be unable to confirm a delivery date without the right laminate, prepreg or copper specification. -
Lead times are less predictable.
A normal order that once fitted comfortably into a standard production window may now require additional planning. -
Pricing can move quickly.
Resin and laminate price volatility means quotations may have shorter validity periods than customers are used to. -
Capacity is being allocated earlier.
High-volume and technically demanding work is more likely to be planned well in advance, particularly where specialist materials or controlled impedance constructions are involved.
Adding Chinese New Year to an already stretched supply chain is not something I would leave until January.
Recommended PCB ordering deadlines for Chinese New Year 2027
Every design and factory is different, so I would always confirm dates against the specific board. As a practical guide, however, I recommend the following:
| Requirement | Recommended planning point |
|---|---|
| Complex, custom or material-intensive PCBs | Begin confirmation and place orders during October 2026 |
| Standard and volume PCB orders | Place orders by early to mid-November 2026 |
| Freight space | Book around three to four weeks earlier than usual |
| Buffer stock for critical Q1 builds | Produce and ship before the January slowdown |
| PCBA builds with long component lead times | Review BOM and reserve materials as early as possible |
For complex multilayer boards, high-frequency materials, unusual finishes, tight tolerances or demanding inspection requirements, October should be treated as the target rather than the fallback.
Do not assume that a supplier’s usual lead time will apply during the pre-CNY period. Ask for the last acceptable order date, the last production date, the last shipping date and the expected date for full production resumption.
Get those dates in writing.
Check your Q1 2027 build plan now
Start with the demand you already know about. Look at your January, February and March production schedules and identify the boards that would stop your assembly line if they were late.
Then separate your requirements into three groups:
- Must arrive before the shutdown window
- Can be produced before Chinese New Year and held in stock
- Can safely be manufactured after normal capacity returns
This exercise often shows that only a proportion of the total requirement is genuinely urgent. That makes it easier to decide whether to run a buffer batch, split an order or use scheduled deliveries.
If you also require assembly, include the full PCBA supply chain in the review. A PCB may be available while components, programming, test fixtures or assembly capacity are not. Good PCBA procurement planning looks beyond the bare board.

Use stock holding, scheduled deliveries and call-off orders
One of the most practical ways to protect Q1 supply is to build a controlled buffer before the holiday and release it as needed.
That does not mean buying more than you can use. It means agreeing a sensible stock level based on your production forecast, shelf-life requirements, cash-flow position and risk tolerance.
At Minnitron, we can support arrangements that include:
- Stock holding in the UK.
- Scheduled deliveries against an agreed forecast.
- Call-off orders for staged releases.
- Split shipments where part of the requirement is needed urgently.
- Buffer quantities for critical production programmes.
This approach can be particularly useful when you have regular demand but do not want every batch to be exposed to post-holiday congestion.
Our PCB storage service is designed to help customers keep inventory available in the UK and call off batches when required. It gives you more control over the buying process instead of tying every production requirement to the next available overseas shipment.
Do not treat PCB sourcing as a simple factory transaction
The cheapest quoted board is not always the lowest-cost solution if it arrives late, needs rework or creates a production stoppage.
This is where professional uk pcb sourcing can add value. At Minnitron, we do not simply pass your files to an anonymous supplier and wait for an update. We review the manufacturing data, raise technical questions early and select a suitable partner from our vetted global supplier portfolio.
We are continually assessing and adding manufacturing partners so we can match the requirements of the product, not force every order through the same route. Depending on the design, volume, timing, compliance requirements and price target, the best option may be a UK source, a European facility or an established Far East manufacturer.
Our global sourcing model combines UK accountability with global manufacturing value. We manage communication, technical checks, production scheduling, quality oversight and logistics from one point of contact.
That is especially important around Chinese New Year, when small delays can quickly become much larger ones.
We can also carry out an in-house DFM review before production. Check the drill sizes, copper spacing, material construction, finish, panelisation and documentation before committing valuable capacity. Fixing a manufacturing issue in September is straightforward. Finding it in January may mean missing the last practical production slot before the shutdown.
Keep a UK or European alternative available
If your programme is highly time-sensitive, do not rely on one route without considering a contingency.
A UK or European alternative may not always provide the same unit price as a high-volume Far East order, but it can provide valuable flexibility for prototypes, urgent replenishment or a small bridging batch. Our network allows us to consider those options alongside overseas production rather than treating them as an afterthought.
That might mean:
- Running a rapid UK prototype or urgent batch.
- Splitting supply between regions.
- Holding a pre-CNY buffer in the UK.
- Moving a critical order to an available European partner.
- Keeping the main volume programme with a vetted Far East supplier.
The right solution depends on your product and priorities. The important thing is to make that decision before the supply chain makes it for you.

Build your Chinese New Year plan in September
Do not wait for a factory circular in January before asking what will happen to your PCB supply.
Check your Q1 2027 build plan now.
Confirm shutdown and restart dates with every relevant supplier in writing.
Review your Gerbers, drawings, BOMs and specifications.
Complete DFM checks before reserving production capacity.
Book complex or custom PCB work during October.
Place standard and volume orders by early to mid-November.
Reserve freight three to four weeks earlier than usual.
Consider a buffer batch, stock holding or call-off schedule.
Keep a UK or European alternative available for critical requirements.
Minnitron can help you build that plan around your actual demand, product complexity and delivery dates. We can review the technical data, select the most suitable manufacturer, manage the production process and coordinate stock holding or scheduled deliveries where appropriate.
